Amid the environmental protection organizations and the international community overlook the violations of the Turkish regime, the regime has deliberately reduced the water supply from the regions of northern and eastern Syria, which led to the drop in the water level of the Euphrates River to dangerous levels, which has become a threat to the environment and the lives of the people in those areas.
Since last January, the regime has begun to reduce the water supply from the Euphrates River to Syria significantly, which has caused a significant decline in the course of the river and a decrease in the water level by at least four meters in the lakes of Tishreen Dam and Tabqa Dam.
The lowering of the water level led to the drying up of pastures in hundreds of villages on both sides of the river, with the water course being polluted by a large percentage, in addition to damage to energy sources and increased hours of rationing electricity in the region.
The General Administration of Dams in North and East Syria said, on Tuesday, that deliberate deprivation of the Euphrates water constitutes a war crime and a violation of the rights of all residents, calling at the same time the international community to intervene and commit Ankara to international law and to stop stealing water and tampering with its levels.
Many human rights organizations condemned, in previous times, the Turkish regime's decision to reduce water resources from the region, including the Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates region, which made it clear that Ankara is using water as a weapon of war against civilians to achieve political and military gains without taking into account the humanitarian needs. .
According to specialists, the Turkish regime's continuing to reduce the water resources of Syria is a violation of the 1987 agreement between Damascus and Ankara, which stipulates that feeding the Euphrates with an average water flow of about 550 cubic meters per second, while the water supply does not currently reach 200 cubic meters.
