Turkey is looking for new parties to involve them in the ongoing conflict with the PKK, and as it tried with Iran in the past, it is trying with Iraq now as well, after it guaranteed the participation of the Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Masoud Barzani, according to the results of the past few years.
The pro-government daily "Turkey" newspaper said today, Thursday, that Turkey has submitted to Iraq four proposals to launch a military operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been locked in a conflict for more than 40 years against Turkey.
A Turkish delegation headed by Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and the commander in chief of the army in the country, Yasar Guler, visited Baghdad on January 18, for this purpose, where they met with senior Iraqi officials, and then to conduct with officials of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Barzani.
Akar and Guler used these meetings to present proposals for action against the PKK in the Şengal district of Iraq.
The newspaper, affiliated with the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government, said that the proposals include a joint Turkish-Iraqi operation, an Iraqi operation with Turkish air support, a joint operation between Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government in the country, or a single Turkish operation.
Akar said that Turkey is closely following the expulsion of Kurdish fighters from the vicinity of Sinjar (west of Nineveh), and that Ankara is ready to provide support in this regard, adding, “We have noticed the convergence of views between the two parties on many files and this is a source of pleasure. We reached understandings on many issues.
Turkey continues to carry out military operations targeting PKK bases along the mountainous border with Iraq, but Ankara's attention is increasingly turning towards Şengal, which is the most strategic region and crossroads between Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, Syria and Iraq.
The PKK was able to reinforce its presence in Şengal after its intervention to protect the Yazidis from an attack launched by the Islamic State terrorist organization in August 2014. After the Kurdistan Democratic Party Peshmerga withdrew with their weapons from the city without any resistance, which caused a real disaster for the people of the region.
