US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Monday that the Islamic State group (ISIS) remains a major threat.
This came on the first anniversary of the killing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.
"While we celebrate this important achievement in the war against ISIS, the work of the international coalition (led by the United States) to combat terrorism is still far from accomplished," the Secretary of State said, in a written statement, published by the US State Department, on Monday.
"ISIS continues to be a major threat," he added.
Pompeo stressed the need to maintain pressure on ISIS remnants in Iraq and Syria, and to continue to strengthen "our collective efforts to defeat ISIS cells and networks around the world."
On October 27, 2019, US President Donald Trump announced that Al-Baghdadi had been eliminated during a special operation in Idlib Governorate, northern Syria.
