The popular boycott campaign in Saudi Arabia for Turkish products extended to Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, Egypt and UAE according to a report published by the Russian agency “Sputnik” today (Saturday), in which it relied on two Turkish sources who spoke to “Reuters”.
The two sources stated that Turkish merchants are complaining about the recent delay in customs clearance in Morocco and Algeria.
They added that Turkish companies faced new delays in the past weeks in exporting clothes to countries in North Africa, as Morocco amended a trade agreement allowing it to raise customs duties by up to 90 percent on such goods.
Reuters quoted three groups in the ready-to-wear sector that they complained about unusual requests for documents and delays up to five times the usual customs clearance time in Morocco and Algeria.
The agency indicated that Turkey exported goods worth 2.2 billion dollars to Morocco last year; This caused a trade deficit for Morocco and prompted some Moroccan lawmakers and industry officials to complain about unfair competition.
“Reuters” reported that Tunisian investors called on the government of their country to take a similar stance to the Algerian and Moroccan position, but the Tunisian government has not yet dealt with these calls.
According to “Erm News” website, the Moroccan steps and their Algerian counterparts that Turkish companies are complaining about come amid accusations that Turkey has inflicted heavy damage on the economies of these countries by dumping goods at the expense of their local makers.
