The presidents of Russia, France and the United States—the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairing countries—issued a joint statement regarding the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone calling for an “immediate cessation of hostilities.”
Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia, Emanuel Macron of France and U.S.’ Donald Trump condemned “in the strongest terms the recent escalation of violence along the Line of Contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone,” said a statement issued on Thursday.
“We deplore the loss of human lives and extend our condolences to the families of those killed and injured,” added the statement. “We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the relevant military forces.”
“We also call on the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to commit without delay to resuming substantive negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions, under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs,” concluded the statement.
The leaders of the OSCE co-chairing countries failed to condemn Azerbaijan for launching the attacks along the entirety of the Artsakh border. They also did not address Turkey’s criminal intervention in the Karabakh conflict.
Separately, the Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a briefing Thursday that Moscow deplored “military rhetoric and action by third countries,” calling it “ineffective and irresponsible, which can cause further escalation leading to destabilization of the situation, which, in turn, can have extremely unpredictable consequences.
Armenia’s Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan told France’s Ambassador to Armenia on Thursday expressed Yerevan’s concern about Ankara’s heavy-handed involvement in the Karabakh conflict and active military operation launched by Azerbaijan.
On Thursday, senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Jim Risch (R-ID), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Ron Johnson (R-WI) released a statement on the Artsakh fighting.
“The rapid escalation of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region is extremely worrying. Sadly, over the past five days, both sides have faced needless casualties. All regional powers involved in the conflict must end their aggressive and escalatory actions, and channel their efforts into bringing all parties to the negotiating table. The risk this violence poses to the people of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the wider Caucasus region is too great,” said the four Republican senators.
