Within the framework of the continuous international efforts to find a solution to the escalating tension in the eastern Mediterranean, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need to stop the escalation there, and to give the space for peaceful methods and dialogue to resolve the outstanding disputes.
Lavrov, who is visiting the Cyprus capital, Nicosia, said in a press conference with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides that they discussed the Cyprus issue and the rights of Cyprus in its territorial waters in accordance with international resolutions.
Sergey Lavrov stressed that his country, as a member of the UN Security Council, is ready to assist by mediation in any future talks Greece and Cyprus hold with Turkey to reach a solution and end the escalation.
In turn, the Cypriot Foreign Minister considered that Turkey continues to violate international laws, stressing the need for the regime in Ankara to stop the violations and practices that he said are violent and do not comply with UN Security Council resolutions.
