A tense atmosphere between the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides in the northern regions along their common border, heralds signs of great conflict, amid clashes between the two parties considered the most violent for years.
In the first indication of continued tension on the border areas between the two countries that started days ago, Azerbaijan announced on Tuesday the killing of seven of its soldiers, including two senior officers, while Armenia also announced the killing of two of its soldiers.
In mutual accusations between the two parties, Armenia blamed the Azerbaijani side for the recent escalation, which again targeted the northeastern parts of its border with Tavush, using drones to bomb civilian sites in the town of Baird in the aforementioned region.
"This aggression against the security of civilians in Armenia will receive an equal response, for which the Azerbaijani side bears all responsibility," said the spokeswoman of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, Anna Nagdelian.
While the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense said that the Armenian side targeted its sites in the Tavush region with artillery, mortar and heavy machine gun fire, adding that the shelling also affected many villages, leaving civilians injured.
The United States, the European Union and Russia have previously expressed their concern about the events on the border between the two countries, and called for restraint and the normalization of the situation on the border between the two neighboring countries.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-old conflict for control of the Nagorno Karabakh region, in southwestern Azerbaijan, which Armenia controlled during the 1990s war after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
